Introduction of Coins
The distinguishing arrowheads added in 1873 continued through 1874. An urgency to replace the earlier, pre-1873 coinage simply didn't exist, however, as silver coins had still not achieved value parity with federal paper currency. This condemned them to remain hidden within most of the nation. Thus, the mintage of 1874(P) quarter dollars was little more than a third that of 1873. Four obverse dies were paired with three reverses in four combinations to produce this coinage. Mint State examples are noticeably less available than for 1873(P), but worn specimens are fairly plentiful. No varieties of interest have been found.Read More
