Introduction of Coins
San Francisco's contribution to fulfilling the terms of the Specie Resumption Act of 1875 led to more than ten times the number of quarter dollars struck there in 1876 over the previous year. Examples are thus common across all grades, with Mint State coins being only moderately scarce. Enough gems are known that this issue is of interest to both type collectors and series specialists. The pressure to make so many coins led to some carelessness in die maintenance, and buyers should avoid examples from rusted dies and die that were severely overpolished to remove signs of rust, erosion and cracking. Many dozens were required for such a large production, and all but one of the reverses were taken from the Type 2 hub with letters TAT of STATES clearly separated. The Type 1 Reverse is thus rare, though of limited interest to general collectors. At least two misplaced date (MPD) varieties are known, these being discovered subsequent to publication of the Briggs book. (This class of variety was just becoming a source of interest at that time, and few persons were yet looking for them.) Most 1876-S quarter display the oddly named Medium, Small S, which is quite small and symmetrical. A few feature the Medium S mintmark that would become the predominant one for 1877-78.Read More
