Introduction of Coins
Both Breen and Briggs show a proof figure of 880 quarter dollars for 1877, while other references show only 510 proofs. The latter figure represents the number of complete silver proof sets sold, but the requirement that complete sets be purchased expired with the administration of Mint Director James Pollock in the 1860s. The higher figure is the more likely total, but this debate will probably go on for years. The proof quarter dollars of 1877 are not rare in overall numbers, yet both gems and Cameo pieces are very elusive. Two die marriages are known, the old Type 1 reverse die of 1872 and a new Type 2 reverse being alternately paired with the same obverse.Read More
