Introduction of Coins
The Philadelphia mintage for 1864 quarter dollars fell to less than half the number produced the previous year, and few of these coins were seen in domestic circulation at or near the time of issue. Some may have returned after 1875, when federal paper money finally achieved value parity with silver coins. When found in Mint State, the typical 1864(P) quarter is quite sharp and lustrous, but there are not very many MS survivors. Most examples are well worn, and even XF or AU coins are rare and in great demand from series collectors. Three unique die pairs produced this mintage, which was thus likely struck in three small batches over the course of the year.Read More
