Introduction of Coins
Though silver coins continued to circulate in the western states and territories during the Civil War, output from the San Francisco Mint nonetheless declined. The year 1864 witnessed the lowest production of S-Mint quarters for the entire decade, and examples very scarce to rare in all grades. Mint State pieces are extremely rare, and most extant coins of this issue are heavily worn. A single obverse was paired with two reverse dies, and all 1864-S quarters have the Large S mintmark that distinguish these reverse dies as being leftover from years earlier.Read More
