Introduction of Coins
Typical of the mid 1860s, this issue has a small mintage reflecting the fact that most pieces would not actually circulate domestically at that time. Survivors are, however, often seen well worn from circulation overseas when new and after 1876 domestically. The falling price of silver drew many expatriate USA coins back home, where they circulated for decades more. Mint State examples are rare, as are circulated coins in the most popular mid-grades such as VF and XF. Two obverse dies, one having a repunched numeral 1, were paired at different times with a single reverse to produce this mintage.Read More
