Introduction of Coins
The introduction this year of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST finally led to retirement of the many Large S reverse dies that had been used for years on the quarter dollar. An entirely new batch of reverse dies was shipped west from the Philadelphia Mint in 1866, and these featured a small, asymmetrical letter S.
