Introduction of Coins
The introduction this year of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST finally led to retirement of the many Large S reverse dies that had been used for years on the quarter dollar. An entirely new batch of reverse dies was shipped west from the Philadelphia Mint in 1866, and these featured a small, asymmetrical letter S. A single obverse was paired with a single reverse to produce this year's modest coinage of S-Mint quarters. Rare across all grades, the 1866-S quarter dollar is extremely so in Mint State.Read More
