Introduction of Coins

The mintage of quarter dollars rose at San Francisco over that of the previous year, but this issue is certainly not common. Unlike its Philadelphia Mint cousin, the 1867-S quarter saw widespread circulation over several decades. Most survivors are quite worn, and this situation is aggravated by the mint's treatment of the obverse die. Larry Briggs reported in his book on this series that the denticles were nearly polished out of the die, leaving the coins little protection against wear. This may have been done in an attempt to remove rust or some other flaw, but the actual reason will likely never be known. A single pair of dies produced the entire issue, and this date shares its reverse die with the 1866-S quarters. This reverse is readily distinguished by a flaw in the mintmark. The lower loop of letter S reveals a deeply raised line that is seen also on the earlier emission.Read More
