Introduction of Coins
The 600 proofs of this issue represent a typical mintage of the period. Since it was unlikely that the Philadelphia Mint would sell such exact figures, it may be that a few of these coins remained at the end of the year and were simply put into circulation. It was about this time that the Mint's proof coins began to decline a bit in quality. The dies for this year and the next several were more carelessly polished, resulting in a lesser incidence of cameo contrast and a higher incidence of visible lines in the fields. While this date is no more rare then most proof quarters of the 1860s, there are fewer examples found with the desirable contrast.Read More
