Introduction of Coins
The 600 proofs of this issue represent a typical mintage of the period. Since it was unlikely that the Philadelphia Mint would sell such exact figures, it may be that a few of these coins remained at the end of the year and were simply put into circulation. It was about this time that the Mint's proof coins began to decline a bit in quality. The dies for this year and the next several were more carelessly polished, resulting in a lesser incidence of cameo contrast and a higher incidence of visible lines in the fields.
