Introduction of Coins
The sudden increase in reported mintage from 1869 to 1870 may have been just a bookkeeping oddity. The lower figures perhaps represented the number of coins sold in complete proof sets, while the higher figures starting this year likely included additional pieces not sold as part of the sets. In any case, there's no significant difference is overall rarity from one date to the next. The proof dies reveal light pitting, and this is symptomatic of the lower quality control typical of proofs from the 1870s as compared to those of the preceding decade. Gems are rare for this date, and this is especially true of Cameo and Ultra Cameo pieces.Read More
