Introduction of Coins

Though the mintage of 1870(P) quarter dollars is low in a general sense, it is nonetheless the highest figure at the Philadelphia Mint since 1864. This issue may have been coined late in the year, as the single die pair employed reveals rust on both sides. This is most pronounced on the Liberty figure, but rust is evident also within the vertical lines of the shield. It's likely that the fields of the dies rusted, too, but this was removed by polishing that left a distinctive pattern of raised lines on the coins struck from them. Well worn examples are moderately scarce, but this entry becomes rare in the higher circulated grades. Mint State coins are very rare, though a few gems have been certified.Read More
