Introduction of Coins

This 1923-S quarter had the lowest mintage of any San Francisco Mint emission of the raised date issues, and it has long been heralded as rare across all grades. When this coin series became quite popular in the late 1930s, dealer's ads typically had all dates/mints priced for sale, but 1923-S was more often unavailable, the ad stating "Wanted to buy" in place of a price. In circulated grades it is second only to 1916 and the overdate in rarity. Mint State survivors are in limited supply, but they are proportionally more available than the mintage would suggest. Gems do appear for sale with some regularity. Though most are lacking a Full Head, 1923-S is not the rarest issue with FH. Many 1923(P) quarters have had S mintmarks applied to them over the years, but these are usually detectable by examining the date. The figures of the Philadelphia Mint issue are thin and sharp, while 1923-S quarters always have a bit of of puffiness to the final two numerals.Read More
