Introduction of Coins
The mintage of this issue suggests a coin that should be scarce in Mint State, but average quality MS pieces are quite plentiful. The 1928-D quarter was among a very few Standing Liberty issues that were readily available from dealers in the late 1930s, when this series was one of the hottest areas of collecting. The distribution of Denver Mint coins seems to have slowed from 1926 onward, with several denominations of D-Mint dates being available by the roll for several years afterward. While MS gems are readily available, these are almost all poorly struck to varying degrees. The shield and Liberty's trunk area are almost always indistinct, as is the eagle's breast. Full Head examples are extremely rare, Jay Cline placing the population at 1% or fewer of surviving MS coins. 1928-D quarters are a bit scarce in the higher circulated grades, but the commonness of MS coins keeps their values low. Varieties of any kind are unusual for this coin series, yet there's a nice repunched mintmark (RPM) for 1928-D.Read More
