Introduction of Coins
Though it has a mintage similar to that of the 1887 quarter dollar, this year's issue seems to be a little more available. It may be that not every coin made was actually issued, since the quarters of 1879-90 were struck merely as a service to those seeking examples and were not really needed for commerce. There are a number of unanswered questions regarding this lost decade. Most survivors are Mint State or nearly so, with heavily worn pieces being rare. This date is a little less likely than the ones immediately preceding to have prooflike fields, and it thus looks more like the currency striking that it is. As was typical of these small mintages, just a single pair of dies was used, with another pair being reserved for the proofs.Read More
