Introduction of Coins
In the years 1879-90 this issue was the only quarter dollar coined in large number for general circulation and the only not struck at the Philadelphia Mint. It's quite popular with collectors for this very distinctiveness. Larry Briggs identified numerous die pairs, all the reverses of which feature the Medium S mintmark used previous during the latter 1870s. Well struck examples are available, but many seen have shallow reverse rims and the letters BER of LIBERTY obliterated from overpolishing of the dies. In overall numbers the 1888-S quarter is fairly common, including a generous quantity of certified Mint State coins.Read More
