Introduction of Coins

The 1919-S quarter dollar is one of the keys to completing this short series at any grade level. Even well worn pieces are scarce and in demand, due to the propensity of 1916-24 quarters to lose their dates after just a dozen years circulation. This particular entry in the series was poorly struck as a rule, a shallow date being one of the consequences. Most worn examples are identifiable solely by the final numeral of the date, as this was the last to wear away, and 1919-S is the only raised-date quarter ending in a 9. A major coin retailer dispersed a hoard of San Francisco Mint quarters dated 1918-20 during the 1980s, and most of these were moderately worn and showed evidence of cleaning in the past. Mint State pieces are not rare in an absolute sense, but gem examples, with or without a Full Head, are quite elusive. While slightly more available than 1919-D with the desirable Full Head attribute, this issue remains quite rare with a decent strike.Read More
