Introduction of Coins

1920 witnessed the second highest production of Standing Liberty Quarters from the San Francisco Mint. Worn examples are fairly common as the result of hoarding during the 1930s-40s. Many of these are identifiable solely because the zero of the date remained when all other numerals had worn away. Mint State coins are not rare in overall numbers, but their quality is typically poor. Worn dies and weak strikes were the rule for this issue. A fair number of gems have been certified, but these are seldom well struck in their centers or at Liberty's head. Coins certified as FH are very rare in any grade. The portion of the die obverse die adjacent to Liberty's left thigh was one of several pressure points where die failure could begin, and one die state of the 1920-S quarter reveals a prominent chip in the die. This resulted in a raised lump that has popularly become the "Tear Drop."Read More
