Introduction of Coins
The degree of cameo contrast between brilliant fields and frosted relief elements peaked for this series in 1898 and began a gradual decline over the next few years. In 1902, it appears that the Mint no longer made any conscious effort to impart this attractive feature, and nearly proofs of this and the next several years are satiny on the devices. While a few examples reveal enough frost to be designated as Cameo, an Ultra Cameo specimen is unknown. Despite a decline in sales this year that may or may not have been related to the quality issue, 1902 proof quarter dollars are plentiful. The number of gems is a bit lower than for preceding years, but there appear to be enough to satisfy the demand from advanced collectors.Read More
