Introduction of Coins

Despite a generous mintage the 1902-O quarter dollar is scarce in all but the lowest grades. There was absolutely no incentive for or interest in saving examples from circulation until the mid 1930s, when the introduction of inexpensive collecting boards jump-started the coin hobby. Mint State coins are likewise very scarce, with gems being exceedingly rare. Like most New Orleans Mint silver coins of the period, the typical 1902-O is weakly struck in places. Frequent trouble spots are the eagle's left (viewer's right) claw and the feathers of the arrows it grasps. These elements are directly opposite Liberty's forehead, a deep cavity in the obverse die, and the planchet metal didn't displace sufficiently to fill both sides. No varieties are reported.Read More
