Introduction of Coins

The new Denver Mint commenced coining operation early in 1906, and the first denomination produced was the quarter dollar. Production began February 15, and more than three million pieces followed by year's end. This issue is quite common in well worn condition, but examples in the higher circulated grades are a bit challenging to find. A fair number of Mint State survivors are known, enough to supply the demand from advanced collectors. Gems are not rare, but they are certainly more scarce than for more common Denver Mint quarters such as 1908-D. Most Denver Mint Barber Quarters, particularly the early dates, are a bit weakly struck. This affects Liberty's hair band and adjacent hair, as well as the arrow feathers placed directly opposite those features. A few repunched dates and a single repunched mintmark are known, all of them quite minor.Read More
