Introduction of Coins

Though the San Francisco Mint's production of quarter dollars tripled over the number coined in 1896, the mintage of 1897-S quarters is still the fifth lowest in this coin series. Examples are very scarce to rare across all grades. Mint State survivors are in very short supply. The census data may be a bit misleading as to the number of gem (MS 65) coins certified, since this rare issue warrants multiple submissions in an attempt to get a still higher grade.  David Lawrence identified two reverse dies having the far right position that dates from an 1893 shipment, this being the last gasp for these leftover dies. A single reverse is known for 1897-S on which the mintmark has the more suitable location above and between letters R D of QUARTER DOLLAR. The centered S is extremely rare within this already rare date/mint. In an article in The Journal of the Barber Coin Collectors' Society, Rich Dula reported that only one in every 15 examples is of this position.Read More
