Introduction of Coins
Fascination with what persons perceived as a new century (this wouldn't actually arrive until 1901) prompted higher than usual sales of proofs this year. It may be that these extra proofs were purchased by non-numismatists simply touring the Philadelphia Mint and bringing home souvenirs. Gems are relatively plentiful for this date, and a good number of Cameo pieces have been certified, yet Ultra Cameo examples are exceedingly rare. It appears that the new hubs for this coin type were adopted after completion of the proof mintage, which typically occurred early in the year. No proofs are known having the Type 2 obverse or the Type 3 reverse, though they are found on currency strikes of this date.Read More
