Introduction of Coins

Quarter dollar coinage was suspended for all of 1824 and most of 1825. Four warrants totaling 168,000 coins were all posted in December, 1825, and this generous figure has provided collectors a large pool of 1825-dated quarters. All are overdates, these resulting from 1822 obverse dies that were first overpunched with first a numeral 4. When demand for additional quarters failed to materialize that year, the dies were repunched a second time with a 5 atop the 4 and 2. The degree to which these underlying numerals are visible has led to some confusion over the years. Current specialists have settled upon the term 1825/2 for the scarce Obverse 1 (B-1) and 1825/4 for the more common B-2 and B-3 marriages, which employed Obverse 2. There are rare examples of the B-2 and B-3 marriages which have had the letters "E" or "L" punched over Liberty's head. No documentation has been found for why this was done, but researchers lean toward the theory that these coins were presented as prizes for achievement in the study of English and Latin, respectively. The fact that all such specimens are in or near Mint State tends to reinforce the idea that they were prized keepsakes.Read More
