Introduction of Coins
1828 quarter dollars are similar to other "common" dates of the 1815-28 series in that circulated examples are fairly plentiful, yet Mint State coins are scarce, with gems being genuinely rare. A few examples have been certified as Prooflike (PL). The mintage figure of 102,000 pieces found in most references fails to include the 4,000 coins delivered under Warrant 1133 of December 29, 1827. Since 1827 quarters are extreme rarities, it is likely that this delivery consisted of coins dated 1828 or, perhaps, even 1825. Two obverse dies and four reverses were resulted in four die marriages, none of the dies overlapping. The 25/50 C. reverse found with 1822-dated quarters, now rusted, was revived for use with 1828 B-3, which is very scarce. B-2 is a little less so, while B-1 and B-4 are fairly common.Read More
