Introduction of Coins

The quarter dollars of 1832 are less common than those of the preceding year, and this is especially evident in the number of Mint State survivors. It's possible that more of the 1831 were preserved for the novelty of their size, whereas this feature was old news by 1832. Also, the published mintage figure for 1832 may have included coins dated 1831, as the U. S. Mint was not particular about such things until Director Robert M. Patterson (1835-52) mandated that dated dies be used only the appropriate year. Just two die marriages are known from a single obverse that was paired with two reverse dies. Both are relatively common in overall numbers, and they're easily distinguished: B-1 has long arrowheads that nearly touch the border, while B-2 has short, squat arrowheads.Read More
