Introduction of Coins

This issue's proof mintage was higher than typical for the period, and it almost certainly reflects an additional number of silver proof sets being purchased by those seeking the new Buffalo Nickel. Though this coin could be purchased in a minor proof set with the cent at just eight cents for the pair, the debut of a new coin type often was the occasion for collectors who didn't buy proof sets on an annual basis to seek one to represent this milestone. The proof quarter dollar of 1913 has been certified in higher numbers than most dates after 1906, though precious few of these coins qualify as Cameo proofs. An unfortunate setback after several years of improving quality in the U. S. Mint's proof coins, it may have played a role in the dismal proof sales for 1914-15.Read More
