Introduction of Coins

This elusive issue had the same mintage as the 1916-D dime, yet it sells for much less, reflecting the far greater number of Mercury Dime collectors over those of this series. Worn examples are only moderately scarce, since collectors in the 1930s and 1940s were always on the lookout for low-mintage coins in circulation. By that time, however, very few still survived in grades F through AU, and such coins are very scarce. Mint State examples are more often seen than XF and AU pieces, but gems are quite rare. The Lawrence book reported a repunched date, but this class of variety was not possible after 1909, as the date was carried on the master die for each year. More likely is strike doubling on the coin observed. Lawrence also noted four slightly different mintmark positions, which is odd for a coin of such low mintage. It suggests that these were struck on four different occasions, with different dies used each time.Read More
