Introduction of Coins

The Denver Mint had just undertaken production of the new Mercury Dime when an order came from the director in Washington, DC to concentrate on the production of quarter dollars until further notice to meet a shortage in that region of the country. This suspended production of 1916-D dimes at just 264,000 pieces, making it the key issue in the Mercury series. Ironically, the resulting 1916-D quarters became the most common issue in the Barber series. This date/mint is common across all grades through MS 65, with a generous number of MS 66 pieces, as well. Most, however, are poorly struck---a common flaw in most of the later Barber Quarters. Repunched mintmark varieties are plentiful, as many as eight being confirmed. Most are quite similar, showing the curve of a letter D within the opening of the final punching. It has been speculated that the the reverse dies shipped to Denver were first punched with the Small D used for cents, nickels and the new Mercury Dimes and then had to be rectified.Read More
