Introduction of Coins

The Denver Mint produced a number of half dollars quite similar to its mintage the previous year, as the nation was still in the midst of an economic recession, and the huge wartime production held additional demand in check. The 1949-D half dollar is notable for being among the issues most often found fully struck, yet it also seems to have more than the usual number of contact marks. This has led to a certified population that is generous through MS-65 for both regular and FBL coins, yet the population of both in MS-66 is extraordinarily low. This issue is essentially unknown in higher grades. There are no popular varieties for 1949-D, though specialists will be alert to a minor repunched mintmark.Read More
