Introduction of Coins

The 1919-D half dollar is among the most poorly struck issues in this popular series. This helps to explain the extreme rarity of certified gems. Though striking quality is not a major factor in grading, the severity of weakness seen on many MS 1919-D halves cannot be overlooked. This issue is highly sought in the upper circulated grades, where it is also a challenging coin to locate, particularly when not cleaned. The repunched mintmark variety illustrated in Bruce Fox's book on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar series is simply a case of strike doubling. This series is remarkably lacking in collectible varieties dated before the mid 1930s.Read More
