Introduction of Coins
The very large mintage of 1951-S half dollars seems to have resulted in a cut back during 1952, though this issue is certainly not rare in Mint State. Thousands of persons were in the habit of preserving rolls of fresh coins at their local bank year after year, a practice that largely ended with the termination of silver coinage in 1965. The 1952-S half dollar is rather common in grades through MS-66, though nearly all of these gems are quite poorly struck from heavily worn dies, a hallmark of S-Mint coins at that time. Examples certified as having full bell lines (FBL) are very elusive. A single variety of repunched mintmark is known for this date, and it's a bit more prominent than most such entries in the Franklin series.Read More
