Introduction of Coins

The Denver Mint set a new mintage record for this coin type in 1952, though it would be broken just two years later. Extremely common in Mint State from the many rolls set aside at the time, 1952-D half dollars are surprisingly scarce in higher grades. While the percentage of certified FBL coins is high, gems both with and without that feature are very rare above MS-65 due to the frequency of contact marks seen. The fact that common dates such as 1952-D were traded by the roll or bag and seldom valued as single pieces for many years contributed to their careless handling. A couple of minor repunched mintmark varieties are known for 1952-D halves, but these are of interest only to specialists. With such a high mintage it's likely that at least one more will be discovered. This is another date/mint that's known with a "Bugs Bunny" type of die clash, though it's barely noticeable.Read More
