This final Franklin Half Dollar from the San Francisco Mint is notorious for extremely poor strikes from severely worn dies. Mint workers knew that the end was near, and no attention was paid to quality control for any of the 1954-S production. While gems grading as high as MS-66 are plentiful from the many rolls preserved at the time, coins certified as having FBL are limited to a fairly small number of pieces graded MS-65 or lower.Read More
