Introduction of Coins

San Francisco's production of half dollars advanced about 50% over that of 1941. Though many rolls of BU coins were saved, most survivors are poorly struck from worn, overused dies. While large numbers of this issue have been certified as high as MS-66, sharply struck examples are very scarce. The majority of 1942-S half dollars display larger mintmarks than in previous years. Two new styles were used: the Trumpet Tail S and the Large S with bold serifs. Leftover dies having the Small S of 1917-40 were also used, but examples with the old mintmark are slightly scarce. A nice DDO variety is known for this issue, along with several lesser ones of little interest.Read More
