Introduction of Coins

The San Francisco Mint coined just over 10 million half dollars during 1945, a slight increase from 1944's total. This work seems to have been performed with little care or attention to quality control, and most examples are poorly struck at their centers. Nonetheless, the certified population of gems is quite high, as strike is not a major component in market grading. Collectors will want to sift through all these gems to find one with sharper details. A trivial DDO variety is illustrated in Kevin Flynn's book on this series, but it of interest solely to specialists. The overwhelming majority of 1945-S halves display the Knob-Tail S mintmark which would carry into 1946. A very few, however, have the older Large, Serif S mintmark, and this is a variety to seek.Read More
