Introduction of Coins
The San Francisco Mint had not coined any circulating half dollars since 1937, and its return to this denomination in 1939 produced a similar quantity to that of 1937-S. Well struck gems can be located for this date, and examples grading through MS-66 are plentiful. The number drop for the MS-67 grade, but there are still enough certified to satisfy the more advanced collectors. The DDO variety for this date is so similar to those of 1939(P) and 1939-D that it likely represents working hub doubling that was then transferred to working dies for all three mints.Read More
