Introduction of Coins

1939's mintage of half dollars at the Denver Mint was nearly ten times that of 1938's paltry figure. Though the nation didn't fully recover from the Great Depression until 1941, things had definitely picked up over the slow years of 1937-38. Like most Denver Mint coins of the late 1930s through the 1940s the 1939-D half dollar is usually well struck. Gems are plentiful through MS-66 with enough MS-67 pieces to satisfy the more advanced collectors. A third is illustrated in Bruce Fox's book, but this is clearly an example of simple strike doubling. The DDO variety known for 1939-D halves is most likely working hub doubling seen on 1939-dated halves of all three mints.Read More
