Introduction of Coins
This issue is moderately scarce by date and mint alone, with Mint State examples being rare. Many survivors are weakly struck and riddled with die cracks. The 1840-O half dollar offers a rich field for variety collectors. Bill Bugert's massive die registry book identifies 14 die marriages comprised of six obverses and 11 reverses. The latter feature no fewer than three different sizes of mintmark, and these have been labeled as Very Small, Small and Large, respectively. The Large O is seen most often, though collector demand for the others is rather limited. The same made be said for the three collar varieties known: 144, 145 or 146 reeds.Read More
