Introduction of Coins
Though not as rare as its Philadelphia counterpart, the 1842-O Small Date, Small Letters half dollar is a very elusive issue in anything but heavily worn condition. The mintage typically cited comprises the total pieces coined in January-February, yet the figure seems a bit high in relation to the coins' survival rate. An unknown quantity of those 203,000 coins were likely dated 1841-O. Just a single obverse die has been found, and this was paired with two reverses. Given the overall rarity of 1842-O SD/SL halves, there is little collector interest in obtaining both die marriages.Read More
