Introduction of Coins
1842(P) half dollars bearing the Small Date style of 1839-41 comprise a minority of this year's output. The Wiley-Bugert book identified just two obverse dies, though this was prior to discovery of the Small Date, Small Letters variety. Walter Breen provided a reconstructed mintage of 191,000 pieces for all Small Date halves. This issue carries a strong premium in Mint State grades, these being quite rare. Circulated examples are available to collectors at only a modest advance over prices for the Medium Date issue. Six die marriages have been observed, these combining two obverse dies with five reverses. The only variety of particular interest is that having a distinctly doubled reverse die (WB-103, FS-801).Read More
