Introduction of Coins
This is a common coin in worn condition, though fully Mint State pieces are moderately scarce. As with most half dollars of this period, gems are quite rare. Though often seen with cracked dies, particularly on the reverse, the typical 1847 Philadelphia Mint half dollar is well struck. Eight obverse dies were paired with nine reverses in various combinations to produce a total of 14 known die marriages. Two collars were employed, these having either 144 or 145 reeds. Varieties are mostly minor, with the very notable exception of the bold overdate, 1847/1846 (FS-301, WB-102). This variety is highly sought and brings a hefty premium.Read More
