Introduction of Coins
This is yet another high-mintage issue in the Seated Liberty Half Dollar series that is abundant in worn condition but rare in Mint State. Half dollars circulated far and wide during the 19th Century, and the 1849-O half dollar is all but unknown at the gem level. Most survivors are well struck, but they suffer from evidence of rusted or spalled dies. To address these flaws the mint frequently repolished the dies, losing some shallow details in the process. Numismatists have identified 16 die marriages resulting from assorted combinations of 11 obverse dies and 12 reverses. There are no notable varieties for this issue, but a wide range of die rotations have been observed.Read More
