Introduction of Coins
Production of half dollars more than doubled over that of 1856, and this would be the first of two large mintage years for the Philadelphia Mint. This issue is common across all grades short of Mint State. Though not rare in unworn condition, gems are extremely elusive. Some 14 obverse dies have been identified, and these were paired with a like number of reverses to create 16 known die marriages.
