Introduction of Coins
This year marked the first substantial mintage of half dollars from the San Francisco Mint, and it is only moderately scarce in circulated grades. Mint State coins, however, are quite rare. Typically, these were quite well made and sharply struck. The large number of dies sent in previous years resulted in the SF Mint requesting no additional reverses for 1858. A remarkable 14 die marriages are known from various combinations of 10 obverse and nine reverse dies. Unlike in 1857, it is the Large S variety which is common, while the newer dies bearing a Medium S were not used as much. All but two of the reverse dies seen on 1858-S halves bear a Large S. A single collar has been identified, and this features 138 reeds. The only desirable variety is VP-001 (WB-103), on which the bottom of a duplicate numeral 8 is seen at the bottom of Liberty's base, directly above the second 8 of the date.Read More
