The mintage figure of 800 pieces is merely an estimate, and the actual number of pieces sold was almost certainly lower. Even so, the proof 1859 half dollar is more available than the previous year's issue. Walter Breen identified three obverse dies for this date and indicated that both the old and new reverse hubs were used for creating proof dies.
