Introduction of Coins
The U. S. Mint began charging a modest premium over face value for its proof coins this year, perhaps in response to rising sales since its first public offering in 1858. Clearly, however, it overestimated sales with its reported mintage of 1,000 pieces. A closer study reveals that only 525 coins were distributed, with the balance being melted at the end of the calendar year. Thereafter, proof coin mintages would be more realistic and based on sales of the previous year. All 1860 proof half dollars were struck with reverse dies taken from the new hub that debuted in 1858.Read More
