Introduction of Coins

Production of half dollars at the Philadelphia Mint declined still further from 1859's figure, and this is a moderately scarce issue in lower circulated grades. It becomes quite scarce at the XF level and higher. Mint State examples are not rare in an absolute sense, but they are noticeably harder to find that for the several preceding years of P-Mint half dollars. On the positive side, the typical MS survivor is well struck from dies that were in good condition. Wiley and Bugert have cataloged nine die marriages, these comprised of seven obverse and eight reverse dies. In an unusual situation for Philadelphia Mint coins, no fewer than three different collars are found for 1860(P): 144, 145 or 146 reeds. Collectors typically take little notice of these, not considering them to be an interesting feature to seek. Both the old reverse hub of 1842 and the new one of 1858 are seen on the reverse dies for this issue. As the older dies were being used up by this time, those taken from the new hub are more often seen.Read More
