Introduction of Coins
Not wanting to have to make a supplemental run of proofs, the Philadelphia Mint struck 1,000 pieces early in 1861. As it turned out, this number was overly optimistic, and no more than 400 were actually placed. The remainder were destroyed early in the following year. This date is comparable in overall rarity to other proof half dollars of the period, with gems being quite elusive. A number of Cameo examples have been certified, and these are extremely rare at the gem level (PF 65 and higher).Read More
