Introduction of Coins

With silver not circulating in most of the nation, the need for additional half dollars from the Philadelphia Mint was minimal. As a result, production was modest, and this issue is scarce across all grades. Mint State coins are more available than one might expect, and this is typical of most P-Mint halves from the war years. A disproportionate number of coins remained idle and survived long enough to become desirable to collectors. When found, such specimens typically are quite well struck from unworn or just lightly worn dies. Nine die marriages are known to Wiley and Bugert, these consisting of nine obverse and eight reverse dies. Surprisingly, no fewer than four different collars were employed for this small mintage---144, 151, 152 or 153 reeds.Read More
