Introduction of Coins
Unlike its Philadelphia cousin, the 1850 New Orleans Mint half dollar enjoyed a large mintage and is common in circulated grades. Mint State survivors are scarce but not truly rare. Most were well made, and a number of gem pieces have been certified. Some 16 die pairs were shipped to New Orleans for 1850's half dollar coinage. Numismatists have identified 12 obverses and 11 reverses that were used in various combinations to produce 14 known die marriages. A minor repunched mintmark (WB-102) variety is known, but no others have been observed. Two widely different collars were employed for this issue---141 and 148 reeds, respectively.Read More
